RENO, Nev. – After a standout season with both Reno 1868 FC and the San Jose Earthquakes, goalkeeper Matt Bersano has been named Reno 1868 FC’s Goalkeeper of the Year.
Bersano ranked in the Top 5 in the United Soccer League for clean sheets (9) while helping the club reach the playoffs in its inaugural season.
Bersano, a native of Arizona, split time with Reno throughout the season while on loan with the Earthquakes.
Perhaps Bersano’s most memorable clean sheets throughout the year came against LA Galaxy II when he helped preserve a 9-0 win. The 9-0 win set a new USL record for biggest win in USL history.
Bersano also helped Reno earn a draw against world soccer legend and Phoenix Rising FC striker Didier Drogba back on June 30 at Greater Nevada Field.
Bersano was called back to San Jose throughout the season, most recently on Sept. 30 on the club’s away trip at D.C. United. Bersano backed-up Andrew Tarbell, who started the season with Reno 1868 FC before earning a starting role with San Jose for the remainder of the season.
