Assistant Coach

Malenab is coming off his 6th year as an assistant coach in the United Soccer League, having joined Reno 1868 FC in 2018 after spending the previous four seasons as an assistant at Sacramento Republic FC.

Since joining 1868 FC, Malenab has been a part of 34 regular season wins as well as the club’s first playoff win over Real Monarchs SLC in 2018.

During the 2014 inaugural season of Sacramento Republic FC, he served as an assistant coach to Predrag Radosavljević (Preki) during the club’s championship campaign.

From 2015 to 2017, Malenab served added video analyst to his duties as an assistant coach for Sacramento under head coach Paul Buckle.

Malenab began his coaching career serving as technical director at various youth clubs in the greater Sacramento area while coaching high school soccer. Along with youth coaching experience, he has served as an assistant coach at the collegiate level, at Cosumnes River College (NJCAA), California State University Stanislaus (NCAA D-II) and San Joaquin Delta College (NJCAA).

He also coached in the Fourth Division in the U.S. Soccer structure as an assistant coach of the Sacramento Knights FC, who played in the MPSL (now NPSL). The 2004 Sacramento Knights qualified for the Open Cup that year and was the last standing amateur team in the tournament.

Chris currently holds various coaching certificates and licenses, including a USSF A-Senior License and the NSCAA (now United Soccer Coaches) Director of Coaching Diploma. Malenab received his bachelor’s degree in sociology from California State University Sacramento and has completed course work in two masters programs; Cross Cultural Education and Performance Psychology. 

Malenab loves the outdoors and enjoys distance running, having completed over 30 marathons including the Boston Marathon (2016) and New York City Marathon (2014). Malenab’s other hobbies include searching for the perfect dessert in the United States, listening to conspiracy theory and true crime podcasts and attending Ke$ha concerts.
