SACRAMENTO, Calif. – A late goal by Sacramento Republic FC knocked Reno 1868 FC out of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup for the third year in a row on Wednesday night.
Reno 186 FC started only four of the starters from this previous Saturday’s match, while Sacramento started eight of its 11 starters from the last time the two teams met. Defenders Nathan Aune and Benjamín Galindo Cruz made their first starts for Reno 1868 FC.
After a rain-soaked first 45 minutes, the two teams went into halftime scoreless after an evenly played first half.
The second half seemed to be looking the same after both sides had missed opportunities in front of the goal. It was Sacramento’s Sam Werner in the 82nd minute who scored the only goal Sacramento would need to move on to the Third Round of the Open Cup.
Reno will travel to Seattle this weekend to take on Tacoma Defiance before returning home on June 1st for the Silver State Cup to host Las Vegas Lights FC. For tickets, visit Reno1868FC.com or the Greater Nevada Field ticket office.
