RENO, Nev.– Reno 1868 FC fell to Portland Timbers 2 3-1 tonight, marking just the club’s third home loss of the season. Corey Hertzog scored his 13th goal of the season, moving himself out of a tie for sixth in the USL and tying a single-season career high.
“Tough match, I thought we played pretty poorly in the first half,” said head coach Ian Russell. “The second half was better we created a lot of chances but just didn’t finish. The finished their chances and that’s the game.”
Portland would score first, earning goals in the 26th and 41st minute. Out of the break, Portland would score again in the 50th minute to make it 3-0.
Hertzog’s highlight-reel sliding goal in the 82nd minute would make it 3-1 late. The 13th goal tied a single-season career high. Hertzog previously scored 13 in 2016 as a member of Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC.
Assisting the goal were Duke Lacroix and Lindo Mfeka, moving Lacroix into a tie for second on the team with five assists. Mfeka’s season total now sits at three.
“You’ve got to learn from any result, positive or negative, and move on to the next one,” said Russell.
