In our Countdown to Playoffs, Reno1868FC.com will be highlighting notable moments, memorable performances, statistical trends, and more leading up to October 26.
Our second installment looks at forward Corey Hertzog’s resurgent 2019 regular season, with one match left to play.
Hertzog signed with Reno just days before he was set to retire from the USL. A 28-year-old veteran, Hertzog was named to the USL All-League Second Team in both 2016 and 2017, but managed just four goals in 16 shots on target in the 2018 season with Saint Louis FC.
Hertzog opened up the 2019 season in a slump, not scoring his first goal until the 9th match of the year. When the forward finally broke out, he did it with a bang. Hertzog scored two goals on May 4 in a 2-2 draw against Tulsa, then followed it up with two more in a 4-1 win over Sacramento Republic FC.
Since then, Hertzog has been Reno’s best source of offense, leading the team in goals (16), shots on target (34) and total shots (73). Additionally, Hertzog sits in second on the team with six assists.
Both the goal and assist totals are career bests for Hertzog. The 16 goals have Hertzog tied for fourth in the USL, and his 73 shots rank sixth. The six assists are tied for 22nd in the league as well.
Hertzog also leads the team in caps, serving as the only Reno player to start all 33 matches this season.
