RENO – At a press conference held today at Whitney Peak Hotel, USL Reno president Eric Edelstein released the “Name the Team” contest winner with Reno 1868 Football Club (FC) as the official name.

The original contest began in mid-September of 2015, garnering over 3,000 fan submissions for a near four-month period. Team officials then narrowed the voting to the most common six submissions for a two-week contest, but a tight race among the top three names – Reno 1868, Reno FC and Reno United – extended the final vote one additional week.

Reno 1868 ultimately ran away in the final poll, making Reno 1868 the only active American soccer team to use the city founding year in its official team name. FC was added to tie into the globalization and continued growth of soccer.

“We have asked for our new fans’ feedback throughout, and they have delivered a name which will uniquely represent our community in the soccer world,” said Edelstein. “The dynamics of the name and wordmark script are just the beginning of a very exciting revealing process.”

The team logo, colors and coaching staff will be announced at a later date.

Fans who submitted the winning name during the original “Name the Team” contest were entered into a grand prize drawing which included: a pair of season tickets for the 2017 season and a customized jersey, in addition to being season ticket holder #0001, giving them the first pick at their seat location. At the press conference, one lucky fan was awarded the aforementioned grand prize. Those who did not win the grand prize drawing will receive a pair of tickets to Reno 1868 FC’s opening night.
