RENO, Nev. – Reno 1868 FC midfielder Junior Burgos will get an opportunity to represent his country in a major international competition.

Burgos was called-up on Wednesday to join the El Salvador national team for the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup, which begins July 7.

“I think this is a huge opportunity to play at the highest level possible,” Burgos said. “I think this is the biggest regional tournament and it’s exciting.

“I am really looking forward to representing my country.”

The Gold Cup is a biannual competition governed by the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football, better known as CONCACAF.

“To be selected to play in an international competition like the CONCACAF Gold Cup is a huge honor and speaks to what type of player and person Junior is,” Reno 1868 FC general manager Andy Smith said.

El Salvador is slated to begin its Gold Cup journey against Mexico on July 9 at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego in front of 80,000 fans.

“To play in front of that many fans for your opening match must be an incredible feeling,” Smith added. “We’re excited that Junior gets to experience that and we’ll be cheering him on from Reno.”

This is not the first time Burgos has been selected to represent his homeland while as a member of Reno 1868 FC.

Burgos was called up on March 20 and has been on international duty playing in international friendlies across the United States.

He’s recently spit time between the national team and Reno 1868 FC.
