RENO, Nev. – A handful of the biggest stars in all of U.S. professional soccer will meet on Friday when Reno 1868 FC hosts Phoenix Rising FC.
Didier Drogba, Omar Bravo will meet Reno 1868 FC’s dynamic scoring attack led by Dane Kelly and Antoine Hoppenot at 7:30 p.m. at Greater Nevada Field.
“Historically Drogba is one of the best players coming out of Africa and one of the premier players to play in Europe in the past decade,” Reno 1868 FC general manager Andy Smith said. “Bravo is one of the biggest names in Mexican soccer and we have both of these players coming at the exact same time along with another top Premier League player in (Phoenix winger) Shaun Wright-Phillips.
“It’s just amazing for our fans to see world class players here in Reno.”
The meeting pits one of the top scorers in the USL (Kelly) against a Champions League winner (Drogba) and Chivas’ all-time goal-scorer (Bravo).
Since making his debut for Phoenix in early June, Drogba has scored three goals and has recorded an assist.
The former Chelsea player and Phoenix minority owner may be best known for guiding Ivory Coast to the 2006, 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups.
He captained Ivory Coast for the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups.
Bravo achieved legendary status while playing for Liga MX giant Chivas de Guadalajara, where he became the club’s all-time leading scorer in all matches.
Reno 1868 FC’s Kelly remains in the thick of the race for the USL’s Golden Boot, given to the league’s top scorer at the end of the season.
Kelly sits in second with 12 goals to his name in USL play this year, just one behind leader and fellow Jamaican Romario Williams.
Hoppenot has exploded over the past month for five goals playing alongside Kelly at the forward position.
Tickets for the massive showdown are available at Reno1868FC.com/Tickets and by phone at 775-334-4700.
Fans are encouraged to wear blue as Saturday is the “Blue Out” at Greater Nevada Field.
