RENO, Nev. – Reno 1868 FC’s match against LA Galaxy II will not only feature fireworks, but it will also feature one of the most recent technological advances in world soccer.
Monday’s match will feature a Video Assistant Referee, better known as VAR.
The video assistant referee reviews decisions made by the head referee.
Monday night’s match VAR will be Alejandro Mariscal, the USL announced Sunday afternoon.
So, what can a VAR review? Let’s go through the basics of one of newest innovations world soccer.
What’s reviewed?
Goals and whether there was a violation during the build up
Penalty decisions
Red card decisions (with the exclusion of second yellow cards)
Mistaken identity (in regards to red or yellow cards being issued)
Where is the VAR?
The VAR watches games on TV screens or from a central operation room, which is in or nearby the stadium. The VAR could also be based out of a match center headquarters elsewhere.
Does anyone help the VAR?
Yes. The VAR is assisted by a replay operator (RO), who has access to the replay system and is in constant communication with the VAR?
Has this innovation been implemented in major competition yet?
Yes. Most recently, the VAR system was used during this year’s Confederations Cup in Russia. Stateside, VAR system made its debut in the MLS in early February of this year.
