RENO, Nev. – Reno 1868 FC’s historic journey in its first season has come down to this.
(3) Reno will play in its first playoff match on Saturday when it hosts (6) OKC Energy FC in the Western Conference quarterfinals.
Kickoff is slated for 5:25 p.m. at Greater Nevada Field.
Reno’s run to the USL Cup Playoffs has been one of incredible resiliency.
After the first month of play, Reno was at the bottom of the Western Conference table and had zero wins.
But after the group of players from all different walks of life finally clicked, the team became the most potent attack in both the USL and all of U.S. Soccer during the regular season.
Led by 2017 Golden Boot-winner Dane Kelly (18 goals this year), Reno scored 75 goals during the regular season jumping from last to a Top 4 spot.
Finds like 2017 USL Assist Champion Chris Wehan (eight goals, 12 assists) and MLS veteran Antoine Hoppenot (12 goals, six assists) helped bolster a Reno attack that put up some of the highest scoring games this season.
As the season progressed, more Reno stars started to emerged and the team soon became one of the deepest squads in the USL. Nearly every player in Reno’s Starting XI has scored a goal this year.
During the regular season, Reno split the series with OKC 1-1. The first win came in OKC back on Aug. 2 after OKC won 1-0 against a Reno squad forced to play with 10-men.
But Reno avenged that loss on Sept. 20 in the “Biggest Little City” after Lindo Mfeka’s hat-trick helped clinch a spot in the playoffs and write Reno into the history books for most goals in a USL regular season.
That 3-0 was part of a week in which Reno scored nine goals and jumped to No. 1 in the USL Power Rankings.
That was OKC’s last loss as the squad closed out the season winning four-straight matches.
Led by 2013 Golden Boot co-winner Jose Angulo, the club has changed its scheme over the past month playing four in the back.
While Angulo’s 15 goals and seven assists have proved vital, OKC’s defense has been better as the club has only allowed three goals while scored 13 during its four-match win streak.
Gates for Saturday’s playoff match are slated to open at 4:25 p.m.
