RENO, Nev. – The stage was set in late June for one of the most epic showdowns of the USL season.

World soccer legend Didier Drogba, international superstars Omar Bravo and Shaun Wright-Phillips were all coming to Reno for a huge Western Conference clash against a Dane Kelly-led attack.

But it was Reno’s defense that would steal the show that night.

Coming in at No. 5 on the list of Top 5 games this season is Reno’s 0-0 draw against Phoenix Rising FC at Greater Nevada Field.

Perhaps no match during the regular season had as much hype as the match that hot June night in Reno.

The league’s biggest stars were going head-to-head in what looked like a for-sure high-scoring match. Drogba, who only played in 14 regular season matches this year, came to Reno with one of the most impressive resume’s in all of world soccer.

Joining Drogba was Mexico’s all-time leading scorer (Bravo) and several players with experience in Europe’s top leagues. Reno had Kelly, who won the Golden Boot after scoring 18 goals this season, to go along with prolific scorer Antoine Hoppenot and Rookie of the Year contender Chris Wehan.

It was Reno who had the most chances that night with six shots on target and an excellent chance in the 35th minute with Dane Kelly stepping up for a penalty shot. Kelly would miss that penalty shot, but Reno’s defense held strong posting a 83 percent tackle success rate.

Captain Jimmy Ockford recorded three interceptions, three clearances and won two out of three aerial duels. Ockford and the rest of the Reno defense held Phoenix’s impressive offense to a draw in front 7,092 fans.

Neither team lit up the scoreboard, but both walked away from the heavyweight fight after a battle well fought.
