RENO, Nev. – Nothing could rain on Reno’s historic night and top match of 2017 back on Sept. 20 at Greater Nevada Field.
Coming in as the No. 1 match of the year is Reno’s 3-0 win against OKC Energy FC. It was chilly and rainy that night. But that was the only downside to what would be a fantastic match for Reno fans.
Reno came into the night two goals away from breaking the USL record for most goals in a single season. Reno was also one point away from clinching a spot in the USL Playoffs.
And it was standout midfielder Lindo Mfeka who took it upon himself to secure the record and playoff spot for Reno. After opening up the scoring in the 18th minute, Mfeka scored his second goal (a beauty from outside the box) in the 62nd minute to break the USL record for most goals in a single season.
But the native of South Africa wasn’t done as he completed his first hat trick of his career in the 67th minute to lock up a win and playoff spot for Reno. The hat trick was also Reno’s third hat trick of the season.
All in all, Sept. 20 had so many factors that led to it being the top game of the year as Reno recorded a hat trick, secured a playoff spot and broke a USL record all in 90 minutes of play.
