RENO, Nev. -- Reno 1868 FC head coach Ian Russell was one of 12 coaches to attain their U.S. Soccer Pro License in a graduation ceremony over the weekend. 

The U.S. Soccer Pro License represents the highest soccer license recognized in North America and over the past year, Russell has taken part in the third course offered by the U.S. Soccer Federation.

The course is designed for coaches to further develop the skills and competencies necessary to work as a professional coach in a professional environment.

Based on their individual needs, each candidate went through a tailored program designed to bolster their efforts to create a winning culture/team, develop a style of play, implement sport science initiatives at their clubs, reflect on their growth as a coach and serve as leaders in their organizations.

"Thankful to U.S. Soccer for helping me through this year-long course," Russell said Monday. "It was very challenging, but well worth it. 

"I definitely think I'm a better coach because of it." 

The course combines theoretical and practical components to help coaches reach their full potential.

The year-long journey to Friday featured in-person instruction, visits by coach educators to candidates’ home club environments, expert guest speakers, webinars and a final assessment.

Russell and his club get back to work on Feb. 9 when Reno welcomes MLS affiliate, the San Jose Earthquakes, to Greater Nevada Field. Kickoff for that match is slated for 12:15 p.m. and tickets can be purchased online at Reno1868FC.com or at the Greater Nevada Field ticket office.
