Our fourth installment looks Reno’s Silver State Cup sweep this year, topping Las Vegas Lights FC.
This season’s Silver State Cup opened up on June 1 at Greater Nevada Field with a 4-0 win over Vegas. The four goals came from forwards Corey Hertzog and Brian Brown, as well as defender Duke Lacroix and former Light Raul Mendiola. Matt Bersano started in goal for Reno, and earned his second clean sheet of the season behind five saves.
The win moved Reno to 2-0-2 all time against Vegas, and 2-0-0 when hosting the Lights in Greater Nevada Field.
Last weekend, Reno went south to Las Vegas and again Bersano put up a clean sheet with four saves. Reno won 2-0 thanks to a first half own goal by Vegas and a late goal by midfielder Siad Haji.
Haji, the San Jose Earthquakes’ second overall pick in the 2019 MLS Superdraft, had never scored a professional goal before taking a pass from Kevin Partida and finding the back of the net.
The win was Reno’s first in Las Vegas after drawing in the first two trips south, and moved the all-time record to 3-0-2 in Reno’s favor. Los Azules have now scored 12 goals in five matches against Lights FC, allowing just five for a +7 goal differential.
Through two seasons, Silver State Cup has always belonged to Reno. Reno leads the all-time point total, 11-2.
